READING READINESS PROGRAM       [Top]

What?
An educational reading and learning readiness intervention program specifically designed to prepare the young learner for formal reading instruction.

Who?
From age five to grade two. A definite need for grade R.

Why?
Research indicates that young children, who are exposed to formal reading instruction before they are neurologically ready, will most probably be a struggling reader in primary school.

How?
Based on sound research on the bodily basis of thought and cognitive development, we have compiled a fun-filled and non-threatening learning experience through a movement program with music, which focuses on specific developmental areas in order to
  • stimulate neurological development
  • stimulate possible aberrant reflexes
  • stimulate visual aspects which are crucial for reading activities
  • develop the basic building blocks necessary for reading for learning
 

READING ASSESSMENTS AND INTERVENTIONS       [Top]

Reading assessment
Reading Zone does a complete reading assessment prior to any reading interventions. This enables us to identify the cause and nature of a child's reading difficulty which is crucial in planning an individualistic and tailor-made strategy to address a child's unique reading problem. Reading difficulties never exist in isolation and therefore we have a holistic approach to reading difficulties, incorporating all the aspects of development those impacts on reading.

We are proud of our excellent results which have been internationally peer reviewed and published.

E-monitored home based reading program
This option offers you the opportunity to address reading difficulties in the comfort of your own home. We provide you with reading software and a methodology in how to manipulate the software program according to the assessment results and according to your child's individual needs. Reading difficulties never exist in isolation and therefore we also provide you with additional exercises, strategies and professional help as part of our holistic approach to reading difficulties.

This program includes the monitoring and support of you and your child on an ongoing basis for 9 months via e-mail. This allows us to ensure reading progress and success.

Note: You may also enroll your child in one of our dedicated reading centres close to you
 

STUDY ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTIONS       [Top]

Reading Zone does a complete study assessment prior to any study interventions. This enables us to focus on the areas of concern and allows us to plan an individual approach to address the study needs of your child or student. This focused approach makes the intervention practical, useful and cost effective. A brain profile forms part of our study assessment as it provides valuable information regarding the way learners think, learn and how they approach their studies.

Counseling sessions focus on the problem areas identified during the assessment. We therefore do not waste your time or money on unnecessary sessions or information.

Counseling sessions are provided individually or in small groups with similar areas of concern. The sessions provide practical and hands-on tools and effective strategies and techniques to store information in the long term memory.
 

BRAIN PROFILING       [Top]

We are accredited Brain Profilers and whole brain practitioners with NBIŽ (Neethling Brain Instrument).

Whether you are a business person, a parent, teacher or child, understanding your learning and thinking preferences will give you tremendous insight in how you learn and teach and what changes you could make to reach your goals. It also provides you with valuable information as to your parenting style, way of communicating to others and in understanding and building meaningful relationships with others - personally and in a working environment.
 

TALKS AND SEMINARS       [Top]

Reading Zone offers short talks and workshops to teachers, parents and communities on topics in the field of:
  • Preparing the young child for formal reading instruction
  • Reading difficulties and interventions (understanding the complexity and what to do)
  • Technology-assisted reading, the good and the bad, what works and what not, what you should know
  • Study difficulties and interventions (why and how)
  • Brain dominance and how it affects learning, teaching, relationships etc.

Short Training Courses for Educators (half day courses)

E-Reading
What research teaches us about the effective use of reading software - irrespective of the program in use at your school. Technology is only a tool to be manipulated for desired results.

Reading & learning readiness
Preparing the young learner effectively for formal reading instruction to follow. This course is applicable to nursery school and foundation phase educators.

Learning to read
With specific reference to reading difficulties and interventions. Why do certain learners struggle to read and what can be done in the classroom?

Reading to learn
With specific reference to comprehension strategies that work. If their is no understanding or insight in reading content, learning cannot take place.

Learning & studying difficulties
Understanding individual learning styles and improving study habits for academic results. This course can be adapted for educators, learners or parents.
 

PROFESSIONAL HELP FOR SCHOOLS       [Top]
  • Complete reading assessments at the school (R60 per learner - minimum of 40 learners)
    - Assessment reports to school and parents with guidelines for effective interventions
    - Global reading report to school as to the reading skills of the learners

  • Assistance in establishing reading centres and training of facilitators at schools (irrespective of the software program in use)

  • We provide impartial advice to schools when they want to invest in reading software programmes.
    (Comparison of reading software programmes was one of our internationally published research projects)

  • Comprehensive study assessments (groups) at school @ R120 per learner. This includes a brain profile (Neethling Brain Instrument NBIŽ) to identify study and learning difficulties. We provide guidelines, practical learning strategies and techniques to every learner assessed in order to improve their results.

  • Fun-filled reading and learning readiness program for the foundation phase (training included).

  • Brain profiling (Neethling Brain Instrument NBIŽ). Understanding your learning, teaching and communication styles and preferences adds value to teaching, learning and parent/children relationships.
